Hello.
I suppose I should really find something witty and humourous to put in here. But I struggle with these sorts of things.
I'll start by saying that I am someone that writes music and love the music I write. It's something called a lot of different things. And thats what I want to address in my first blog.
Hardcore Breaks
Rave Breaks
J-Tek
New Old Skool
Breakbeat Hardcore
Nu-Rave
Apparently, these genres are all connected to one style of music. Which confuses me.
I have two favourite websites to do with the music I write. Unfortunately these websites are at some sort of war to do with the name of the Genre. Its not really for me to say why, or how, but as someone that is involved in both sites, I sometimes get frustrated.
As this is my web diary, so to speak, I dont particularly care if anyone reads this. It's more to do with me getting my thoughts out of my head, so I can remain focused and relaxed about the stupid things that go on in this world. But why is there always an element of 'One-upmanship' in everything we do?
Why does one man's music have to be better than anothers? Why do people pigeon-hole their style instead of feeling the tunes and creating new, exciting and original music? Why do people say things like 'its all about the music' then alienate other artists and labels by not treating them fairly? Why criticise the artist for doing exactly what the criticiser is doing?
Surely a diverse scene is a thriving scene?
I dont like a lot of the music in the scene at the moment. I think it's boring as hell. However, the few gems that surface from time to time are really really good and make the scene worth being a part of. Although I am actively trying not to let it govern what I do.
My opinion is that Old Skool had its day. It's not Old Skool, its New-Old Skool, or Hardcore Breaks, or something equally as pigeon-holing. The problem is that I just dont find it interesting anymore. Although I'm sure that many of you will and do. I know I am in the minority, but I strive for new things. Something that is old, is, by default, not new. The same with what people call 'Rave Breaks'. It just doesnt do it for me. Re-hashed old-skool tunes with a watered down beat just isn't my thing.
However, thats not to say that I dont understand the appeal to people. Where there's a market, theres music. So although I find the music (with the exception of a few tracks) a bit boring, I admire anyone for having the balls to put their music out to the general public. To try and push the music forward needs muscle, and muscle comes from having strength in what you do publically, privately and how you interact with similar groups of people striving for the same goal.
The music does the talking, but the image we create around the music can damage the outstanding work that people put in. I hope things get better.
With that in mind, I have decided to do an album and start a monthly podcast for summer release. This album will be a free download, and it will cover a whole range of rave music styles. Basically, I wanted to be totally self-indulgent, for no profit and purely release an album of tunes that I have been involved in, and like quite a lot. The podcast will be similar to my old Sunday Night RAW internet broadcasts a few years back. It's 5 years since I met some really good friends, and it's going to be a 'tipping of the hat' to the good old days, when I was thinner, more attractive and more opinionated!
This wont make a lot of sense to a lot of people. Thats ok - if you want to know, just ask.
So, here's to my new Blog, and continued growth of the music scene I have loved being a part of for the last 19 years.
Long live the music!
Outtahere.......
